Abraxas is a mythical Gnostic symbol that represents the number 365 in Greek, and Abraxas Petroleum is working hard as a 365-days-a-year oil and gas company. The independent energy company is engaged in natural gas and crude oil exploration, development, and production. It operates primarily in Texas (in the South, along the Gulf Coast and in the Permian Basin), the Rocky Mountains, and the Mid-Continent, and in 2010 the company reported estimated proved reserves of 26.6 million barrels of oil equivalent. That year Abraxas Petroleum also owned interests in more than 143,600 net acres, primarily in mature fields and in more than 1,830 gross producing wells.
